Many people in the Fort Lauderdale area have likely caught wind of the news that Heidi Klum and Seal have decided to divorce. While their situation may seem difficult to relate to -- not everyone has their divorce plastered across celebrity gossip magazines -- there are several things that Florida residents can learn from the high-profile couple's situation.

While it's not completely clear at this point, it is certainly likely that the supermodel and her singer husband drafted a prenuptial agreement before tying the knot. So what does that mean for their divorce? To figure that out we will have to take some numbers into account, and a recent article from Forbes does just that.

For starters, the pair has been married since 2005. They have four children, including one daughter that Seal adopted from a previous relationship Klum had. While both parties can certainly be considered wealthy, Klum is likely worth significantly more than Seal after a successful career as a Victoria's Secret model, her role as host of the hit TV show Project Runway and several other endorsements and fashion lines she has been a part of. Seal, on the other hand, has released several CDs, none of which did particularly well.

Forbes estimated that Klum is probably worth between $50 million and $70 million currently, while Seal's net worth is likely closer to $10 million or $15 million. In their situation, having a prenuptial agreement would have been a smart idea -- especially for Klum, who may have been set to lose half of her earnings otherwise. A prenuptial agreement can allow a couple to decide about things like child support and spousal support should a divorce become necessary.

Although many Floridians are not worth $70 million, it's important to know that prenuptial agreements aren't just for the rich and famous. It can be a helpful tool for detailing plans for a family business or a major inheritance, for example. For more information about whether you should consider a prenup, it may be helpful to speak with an experienced family law attorney.
